Karluk River Adventure

We recently got to play tourist on our own island and travel to the Karluk River, where we stayed at the Portage Cabin. We unplugged, we relaxed, we tested out our bug suits (yes, they worked great), we slept (a lot), we read (a lot). The flight to and from was amazing. We canoed up river and spotted a Trumpeter swan pair and a baby. We walked the boardwalk that goes towards the head of Larsen Bay. We made wordle a multiperson game, using pen and paper. We hung out with a dragonfly named Duwayne for twenty-four hours. We didn’t google any of our questions. It was an adventure locked into our memories.

At Home with O'Brien and Erin

Although this island grips its inhabitants with a grasp you almost can't escape, sometimes it is forced to let go. Part of our unique culture here, one that is a town fueled by Fishermen and Coast Guardsmen. The hardest part is saying goodbye to good people, much like we did last summer, but always remembering Kodiak never escapes their heart.

We look forward to this family's return one day.

Wherever I am With You, 3/12

On a recent drive home, my youngest asked if I knew who created the world. I was curious as to her response, as she's been quite fascinated with God recently. She replied "that guy we talked about at school today," & my middle piped up, "God!". We then discussed how people believe all different things, and how we are all welcome to believe whatever we want, but the most important thing is to respect and appreciate differing beliefs, as well as our own. Children do that more often than adults. Without knowing. They remind us how rich and rewarding the simple things are; how to make friends with strangers; how to love and appreciate all. Perhaps it's naive, perhaps it's the lack of exposure to many things in the world, but I like to think it's something we can learn from. Because we need it, we need more respect, more peace, more love, more friendship and above all, less fear and less hate.
