Karluk River Adventure

We recently got to play tourist on our own island and travel to the Karluk River, where we stayed at the Portage Cabin. We unplugged, we relaxed, we tested out our bug suits (yes, they worked great), we slept (a lot), we read (a lot). The flight to and from was amazing. We canoed up river and spotted a Trumpeter swan pair and a baby. We walked the boardwalk that goes towards the head of Larsen Bay. We made wordle a multiperson game, using pen and paper. We hung out with a dragonfly named Duwayne for twenty-four hours. We didn’t google any of our questions. It was an adventure locked into our memories.

100 Days of Summer, Week 1

July 14, 2018

May 25th - officially the first day of summer, another soaking wet, blustery day, filled with too much time indoors, a wet walk outdoors and listening to the rain fall in the hoop house...and a complete avoidance of Crab Fest, we saved that for Saturday

May 26th - it always seems the last day of school corresponds with decent weather, a few years ago we unintentionally started the tradition of a fire and bubbles in the yard, to celebrate the kickoff of summer; this year didn't happen, courtesy of the rain, but we saved it for the following day, when summer really started creeping up.

May 27th - at the end of last summer, we put up our hoop house and prepped beds for this year. we're not skilled gardeners, our learning curve is huge, but we're excited at the prospects and hopeful for some success. we've also spent ample time in there in the last few weeks, sometimes to just sit for a moment.

May 28th - it's special watching our kids grow up with their cousins, fighting and loving like siblings. it's an unique and treasured dynamic.

May 29th - she opted out of hula hooping in her kinder talent show last week, hiding under the table as her classmates performed. she prefers the big stage, with hundreds watching her, but not so much the small stage. lucky for us, she also enjoys performing for family.

May 30th - popsicles , also known as practicing for summer, we heard it's supposed to break 50 the next few days and sunny. we are ready!

Elena's newborn session was split into two, I first met her at just 12-hours old at the hospital and a few weeks later, spent time with her at home. A lot happens in those short few weeks, new expressions and personality emerges. Documenting those changes is a treasure.

I treasure Sunday's. I have designated it as an unspoken family day, a lounging day, an adventure day, a day that is extra-special during the school year, when routine's are in full-swing. They are often concluded at my parents' home with hot, homemade soup. Soup on Sunday's, a family tradition we grew up with.

This particular Sunday was different, as they were out of town, and our middle celebrated his 8th Birthday, on Father's Day. He threatened to ditch us, with just his Dad, laughing that since the day was all about the two of them, it should just be the two of them. Lucky for us, his humor didn't get the best of him, & he let us tag along. Because it was a good day, as Sunday's tend to be, especially extra-special Sunday's.
